Linguistic landscape
What can we learn from research on language in the public space
The International Program
We are all surrounded by language, not only what people speak but also how language is represented in the public space in street signs, advertisements on bulletin boards, on busses, street names, graffiti as well as sounds. The field of language in public space, i.e., linguistic landscape, is an emerging field of research which examines the presence or absence of languages in the public space.
The city is an arena of political, social, educational and economic conflicts. This talk will explore the fascinating realm of 'linguistic landscape', specifically in the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
